Understanding Competent Persons Schemes (CPS)

What is a Competent Persons Scheme (CPS)?
Competent Persons Schemes were established by the Government to allow companies to self-certify their compliance with Building Regulations without needing a separate inspection from Building Control.

Benefits for Homeowners
In the UK, all replacement windows must adhere to building regulations, covering aspects such as insulation, fire safety, security, and overall safety. You need a Compliance Certificate to prove this compliance. This certificate can be obtained through multiple organizations, including Certass.

The cost-effective way to obtain this certificate is by using an installer who is a certified member of a CPS, such as Certass, who can self-certify their work. Alternatively, you can have Building Control inspect and certify the property, though this is usually more expensive.

About CERTASS
Certass is a government-authorized Competent Persons Scheme for the replacement window industry. It vets installers and issues Compliance Certificates, ensuring that all work meets the required building regulations. As a customer, choosing an installer registered with Certass ensures quality and compliance.

Profix1 and CERTASS
Profix1 is a registered member of CERTASS. To become registered, Profix1 underwent a comprehensive assessment process that includes examinations, interviews, and on-site evaluations to ensure compliance with building regulations.

Receiving Your Compliance Certificate
After your windows are installed and payment is completed, you will receive a Compliance Certificate from CERTASS within four weeks. This certificate is essential if you decide to sell your property, as it will be required by the buyer’s solicitor. If you don’t have a certificate, you will need to get your windows certified by building control or provide indemnity insurance.

Scheme Coverage
The scheme generally covers direct replacement windows and doors in domestic buildings. It does not cover new window openings, new extensions, or modifications like widening an existing window opening. Conservatories and porches typically are not included either.

Additional Benefits

Deposit Protection: Certass requires an insurance-backed guarantee to protect your deposit if the installer goes out of business.
Consumer Code: Certass members must adhere to a consumer code that ensures fair and high-quality service.
Dispute Resolution: Certass offers an affordable Alternative Dispute Resolution service as an alternative to court proceedings.
